Rule #1: Get a second opinion

Four years ago today, I met the oncologist who would save my life.

I had never heard of him, had no connection to the hospital where he worked. But there was something about City of Hope that inspired confidence.

Other hospital sites talked about "treating the whole person" (whatever that means). City of Hope was like, "You know those cancer drugs being used at every other hospital in the world? We made those." My words, not theirs.

When you're newly diagnosed, confidence ranks right up there with chemo and comfort food. If your medical team doesn't inspire confidence, run. Get yourself the second opinion you deserve – and watch what it does for your self-confidence.
